The nine islands of the Azores belong to the Atlantic Ocean. They are positioned in mid-Atlantic. Distance to the coast of Portugal: 900 miles. Distance to Bermuda: 1800 miles. They can be divided into three groups: Flores and Corvo (western islands), Faial, Pico, Säo Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira in the center, and the largest island Säo Miguel and Santa Maria in the east.
Every island has it's own port, except of Corvo. Anchoring on Corvo is difficult and the weather is instable. An excellent marina has recently been built in Horta, in Ponta Delgana and in the future in Terceira.
The Azores are named after the hawks that are flying over the islands. The first settlers tought they were vultures, which are called açores in Portuguese.
